The residency training program at KUMC is dedicated to producing excellent, versatile urologists. It is our belief that graduating residents should be as equally qualified to pursue a career in academic, sub-specialty urology as well as a career in the private-practice arena. Our training program supports these choices by supplying a well-grounded and diverse experience. Residents rotate through several institutions, including: Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City Veterans Administration Hospital, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Centerpoint Medical Center (private practice) and Research Hospital (private practice). All facilities are within 10 miles of each other in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The residency program spans five years and includes one year of general surgery and four years of dedicated urology. Three residents are accepted per year through the AUA-sponsored match. Each resident applicant is also expected to go through the technicality of matching through the NRMP for their one year of general surgery.

While the operative and clinical experiences of our residents are extremely strong, we believe that it is equally important for any urologist to have a working understanding of how to perform and critically evaluate basic science and clinical research. Each resident is therefore actively involved in the development and completion of publications and research throughout their five years of training.
